Egg Whites To lose fat you have to choose low fat foods the majority of the time. The problem with whole eggs is the fat content.
Egg whites and egg beaters give you high quality protein without the fat in the yolk. This doesn’t mean you should eliminate yolk. Just limit it.
One whole egg and three egg beaters will give you around 5-7 grams of fat and about 15 grams of protein.
Chicken & Turkey Breast
Go skinless, and stick to the light meat found in breasts. Thighs are higher in fat.
Broil, grill, or roast your poultry. Sorry, fried chicken does not count as a weight loss food!
And try to avoid the sliced lunch meat you find at delis or pre-packaged in supermarkets.
These are OK occasionally. Just don’t make them a regular part of your diet. Lunch meats are loaded with sodium, preservatives, and other nasty chemicals.
Fish Most fish are very low in fat and high in protein. Some fish like salmon, trout, and sardines are high in fat. The omega 3 fatty acids make them worth eating at least a couple of times a week.
Bake, grill or broil your fish but don’t ruin it by adding high fat sauces and butter.
Lean Red Meat Many people believe red meat is just plain bad for you and needs to be eliminated if you want to lose weight.
Nope, not true.
The trick is to choose the leanest cuts and keep your portion sizes small.
Example: Eat this: 6 ounces of trimmed top round steak – around 9 grams of fat. Not this: 6 ounces of untrimmed steak can have close to 40 grams of fat!
The leanest cuts of beef are eye round, top round, round tip, top sirloin, bottom round, top loin, and tenderloin.
For ground beef, look for ground sirloin or ground round.
Here's a tip: look for the word “lean” on the package in a grocery store.
You can go a step further and trim any visible fat from steak.
Red meat is high in protein, iron, B-12, and creatine. Consider eating it at least a couple of times a week.
By no means is this a complete list of weight loss foods. There are many healthy choices. You just have to know what to look for.
Remember these general guidelines when you make your food choices:
Avoids foods that are:
white (bread, rice, pasta, etc.)
high in saturated fat
high in sugar
high in sodium
Eat foods that are:
protein rich
rich in whole grains
natural and unrefined
packed with fiber
Eat a mix of carbs, protein and good fat. And don’t forget to drink lots of water.
The guidelines above will help you lose weight, keep it off, and most importantly help you maintain good health.
